When I arrived in Ennis, Montana I asked a jogger for advice on a good place in town to spend the night. The jogger who turned out to be Jon instead offered me to stay with him, his wife Ceci, and their kids, which I did. They also cooked me a great dinner and took me to the best 4h of July Parade in the region! Thank you for the great time! 4h of July Parade. Ennis, MT. Stars and Stripes! At the 4th of July Parade in Ennis with Shan, Jon and Ceci. 4h of July Parade. Ennis, MT. Mountain Pass on Highway 287 outside Ennis, Montana. Steep 2000ft climb – but what a great view as a reward! Virginia City was made for bikers! The remains of the Gold Rush in Nevada City, Montana. Twin Bridges had a really great free bike hostel, the kind that we had fallen in love with in Missouri. I met Arlo from California who cooked us one of the best breakfasts of the trip, and Travis who I rode with for a couple of days. Between Twin Bridges and Dillon, Montana. Travis and I made it to the top of Big Hole Pass late in the evening after a long day of riding in headwinds and climbing over Badger Pass. Consequently, I renamed the pass in my mind, adding a three-letter word in the middle:-) After camping in Jackson, we rode through Big Hole Valley to get a big breakfast in Wisdom. Near Wisdom Travis and I met Thomas Camero who was last in the Trans Am Bike Race at the moment, but was in a great mood. The crazy amount of mosquitoes there didn't leave much time for an extensive conversation with him. Howdy to you, too! Breakfast in Wisdom, MT. Following the climb up Chief Joseph Pass, Travis and I enjoyed a really long downhill to Sula. Travis taught me a lot of tricks in bargain hunting, such as buying really cheap overripe bananas at places like this. Highway 93 outside Victor. Missoula The Proof! I made it to the ACA headquarters in Missoula! Look at them bikes inside Adventure Cycling Association's headquarters in Missoula! Surfing in downtown Missoula. All these old abandoned bridges in the United States always seem to tell a story when you pass them. Riding on an Interstate? Done that! I-90 west of Alberton. Later I had a superior Caesar Salad in Superior. Riding a bicycle on an Interstate is seldom a great thing to do, but NEVER fun with these rubble strips! Camping in Saint Regis, MT. The campground even had a swimming pool. Taken from a bridge of I-90. People just ignored the signs saying not to feed any squirrels at this I-90 rest area. That made eating lunch there almost impossible:-) Of course the last mile in Montana was another mountain pass. I heard a lot of bicycle rumors about Idaho (bad roads, crazy drivers etc...), but it was actually one of the best states to ride in. Lots of bike trails and friendly small town folks! The views in northern Idaho weren't all that bad. Sean from Louisana caught up with me when I took a break. He was riding from NYC to Seattle. What a coincidence. We couldn't wait to take a swim in Lake Coeur d'Alene on a hot day. However, some gated communities made it pretty hard to get down to the waterfront. Some gates were easy to get by and some weren't :-) Down at Lake Coeur d'Alene.
